State tourism director: Outdoor assets, low population density offer region leg up in attracting visitors, new residents

Northeast Tennessee’s scenic beauty, outdoor recreation opportunities and low population density position its tourism industry well to recover from the COVID-19 downturn, the state’s Commissoner of Tourist Development said. “When you take counties like Washington, Sullivan, along with Sevier and all of the beauty with our lakes, with our rivers, with our mountains, we really do have an advantage,” Mark Ezell told News Channel 11. “Especially when people are wanting to drive instead of fly. So a lot of folks in this nation can get to Northeast and East Tennessee to enjoy the great outdoors.”

El Paso Texas, Cloudcroft New Mexico and White Sands

Sometimes when you travel your destination may be surrounded by other points of interest that are nearby enough to take a visit. This can truly be said for the city of El Paso Texas. This city sits on the westernmost part of the state where Texas, New Mexico and Mexico meet. Do you want to know of things to do in El Paso Texas?

El Paso the city is rich in history, culture and food. If you ever go there you must visit the downtown museum row and the nearby mission churches as well. El Paso is the sixth largest city in Texas, United States. The city of El Paso and other nearby cities, such as Juarez and Las Cruces, New Mexico are referred to as The Borderland. El Paso, nicknamed “Sun City” is also said to be the home to children of the Spanish Conquistadors. Want to really know what to do in El Paso Texas?

What to do in El Paso Texas is an open ended question since your options are limitless. Most visitors are not able to see and experience the New El Paso experience in even a full week visit. That is why visitors often return to enjoy the El Paso culture year after year.

Many visitors to downtown El Paso often stay in the mid-century modern hotel called Hotel Indigo which has views of the downtown area. This entire downtown area is widely known as El Centro and has a bicultural identity. The El Paso downtown Arts District which is known for its exhibitions, concerts, festivals and museums. The El Paso Museum of Art has free admission and a unique collection of modern contemporary Mexican and American art.

Another must see is the historical missions in El Paso dating back to 1660. The El Paso Mission Trail Association is dedicated to the education, promotion and preservation of the missions at Ysleta, Socorro, and the San Elizario Chapel. These three historical landmarks are listed as the oldest churches in the state of Texas.

You will notice that right across the border is Ciudad Juarez in Mexico. One of the neighborhoods closest to the Mexico border is called Sunset Heights. It’s an older neighborhood but is slowly being reinvested it again to be prominent part of Old El Paso. El Paso is one of the largest ports of entry on the US-Mexico border and it’s a major centre for manufacturing and international trade. In fact it’s the 16th largest trading centre in the United States.  It’s also interesting that El Paso’s primary sectors of manufacturing include automobiles and electronic components. Passing the border is an everyday occurrence for many people here in this region of Texas with almost 20,000 pedestrians a day and 35,000 cars.

The entire El Paso region is located on the Chihuahuan Desert. Annual rainfall here is very scarce but it’s more prominent in the summer months. The best views of the city is when you take the scenic drive overlook where you can see the Rio Grande Ciudad de Juarez and surrounding mountains called the Franklin Mountains of Texas that are a small range of mountains that extend from El Paso into New Mexico. The highest peak reaches 7,192 feet.

While in the El Paso area, you must take a trip into New Mexico one and a half hours north to the White Sands National Monument. It’s more like a national park that you have to see to believe. As you come upon White Sands from a distance, it resembles a snow covered white sand winter wonderland.

White Sands National Monument is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. This unique sand gypsum is a mineral that dissolves in water and tends to get washed away but in this one arid region, the climate is dry enough so that the gypsum sand has spread over a 275 square mile area.

The environment here in White Sands is very dramatic and constantly changes with the wind. The White Sands National Monument is the perfect place for locals and visitors alike to do hiking, photo shoots or sledding if you like these beautiful sand dunes

Also about 108 miles by car from El Paso is Cloudcroft, New Mexico. The elevation here is 8,668 feet above sea level and you often get snowfall up here during the winter months.

Cloudcroft is somewhat of a touristy classic 1860’s western timber town with lots of fun things to do and see. The thing you will notice first is the quick change from the high desert below to a mountainous rocky terrain with ponderosa pine everywhere.

My brother Bob and his wife Patty recently visited Cloudcroft, New Mexico with friends and had a fabulous time. They said they were busy all day long visiting the various shops, restaurants and points of interest all over town. Just to let you know, Bob is a snow lover but wore his shoes during most of their visit there.

Cloudcroft’s local museum is filled with the logging and railroad history of the area. Cloudcroft showcases unique events all year long. Summertime temperatures in Cloudcroft at this altitude typically stays in the cool 70 degree range as locals and visitors really enjoy it. During the winter season, it’s all about ice skating, skiing and inner tubing that everyone loves.

Bottom line it’s adventurous to visit the entire El Paso region with New Mexico, Mexico and other attractions being so close. Things to do in El Paso Texas alone will keep you entertained and quite busy all week long day after day so enjoy your stay and welcome to the New El Paso.

Fun, food and adventure in the desert starts here!

Fall Foliage Watch – Tennessee Style

Fall Foliage Watch – Tennessee Style

Fall Foliage Watch – Tennessee Style can take you back to the days of Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett when they trekked the Cumberland ridge on foot as frontiersmen exploring this vast wilderness and often commenting of the spectacular beauty and wonder that Tennessee had to offer especially during each fall season. When I personally witness the change of colors of the leaves each autumn season in Tennessee, it always brings me a sense of divine appreciation.

Most people think of New England as the main destination to see the fall foliage, but there are other states that offer top quality views of colored leaves fall. Tennessee is just one state, with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offering numerous autumn foliage tourism opportunities. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is known internationally by tourist as the “most visited National Park in North America,” and offers an impressive view of the changing colors of trees that are settled an amazing 11,482 feet above sea level.

Typically beginning towards early to mid October each fall season, eastern Tennessee offers the first fall foliage view, with the western part of the state doing the same at the end of October and sometimes towards the beginning of November. There are more than 400 species of trees there that feature brightly colored leaves throughout the fall.

                Tennessee River Fall River Cruise

For a more romantic autumn Fall Foliage tour, get on board the Tennessee River Fall Cruise. The Tennessee River in an area known as the Tennessee Grand Canyon. Visitors see a variety of autumn colors found in the trees around the canyon. The captain of the tour boat also provides a narrative about the Native American history of the area. There are binoculars on board to narrow your viewing pleasure of both fall foliage and wildlife. The boat moves at a snail’s pace so visitors don’t miss anything. The tour also includes a full barbecue dinner for all guests.

Did I mention that Chattanooga Tennessee offers several awesome fall foliage steamboat excursions too? The Fall Colors in the Scenic City you must see to believe!

Tennessee Central Railroad’s Fall Foliage Excursion

The Tennessee Central Railroad Museum offers its customers the opportunity to see the colorful leaves across the state from an authentic rail environment. With large windows made for sightseeing, this excursion train also has air conditioning, luxury seating, and additional activities on board. Departing Cookeville, Tennessee the fall foliage excursion is a 180-mile round-trip which travels through the Tennessee countryside for flashes of fall color, as well as brief stopovers at some of the smaller towns in the state, like Watertown and Monterey.

Did I mention that Chattanooga Tennessee offers several awesome fall foliage train excursions too? The Fall Colors in the Scenic City you must see to believe!

                Smoky Mountain Fall Foliage

Visiting tourist simply marvel each fall season at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The always colorful Smoky Mountain Foliage offers visitors the opportunity to see the stunning colors of autumn present in this mountainous region that stretches across eastern Tennessee. There are always local guides who spend typically three hours with each visitor group, providing some informative narrative about the local area, the fall foliage best observation points for scenic views and the history associated with the Smoky Mountain range itself.

One of the best observation points for your fall foliage viewing pleasure is the tour stop at Newfound Gap, which serves as a marker for the North Carolina and Tennessee state line. It offers visitors the chance to see scenic fall foliage well above the tree line.

                Fall Foliage Photography Quick Tips

Basic guidelines of landscape photography can be applied correctly to the image of fall foliage to enhance the myriad of warm reds as well as oranges on the nature canvas out there.

Many types of fall foliage or autumn leaves photos are shot from the trees at a distance, creating a thin carpet of different colors against the earth and the sky. Never hesitate to approach the trees or even to photograph a colorful tree from an unusual angle, for example under the branches of the trees.

Lastly, try adding a different but related theme to the photos for soft or strong contrast. For example, you could place a squirrel near the viewer with a colorful spot behind it in the foreground. However, if you cannot get so close to the squirrel or any other wildlife subject, just select a nearby house, stream, barn, fence post or tree that speaks to you.

Middle Tennessee Offers Stunning Fall Colors

In Middle Tennessee, one has to take a visit to the historically famous Natchez Trace Parkway. It’s a scenic roadway that begins just west of Nashville and extends hundreds of miles deep into Mississippi. Although it typically doesn’t last very long, each fall the leaves turn their autumn colors and the look is spectacular.

All around Middle Tennessee you can witness the splendor of fall colors from within Nashville itself, to the surrounding communities of Brentwood, Franklin, Leiper’s Fork, Nolensville, Murfreesboro, Lebanon, Mt Juliet, Hermitage, Old Hickory, Hendersonville and Gallatin.

It’s from Nashville that you can head north to Ashland City and Clarksville to see the wonder or go south a few hours to Chattanooga for a fall foliage experience like you haver never seen. In fact, Chattanooga has everything when it comes to viewing fall colors from hiking, going by Riverboat or even by Train… Chattanooga really has you covered for any option.

Like I mentioned earlier, timing is critical in seeing fall colors at their absolute peak in Tennessee. Once it hits… the spectacular colors don’t last that very long.

From Dollywood Theme Park in Pigeon Forge to the east, or to Elvis’s Graceland Mansion in Memphis to the west, Tennessee offers several locations like Chattanooga and other places of interest from all over the state to catch the fall color season. You just need to be ready to enjoy and savor it when it comes your way.

Fall Foliage Watch – Tennessee Style is really a special event each fall season to embrace and behold.

Point Barrow Alaska – No Roads In Or Out

Point Barrow Alaska – No Roads In Or Out

Point Barrow Alaska is the northernmost point in Alaska, far above the Arctic Circle and even today has no roads (going very far) in or out of this community of 4,335 people. Point Barrow is locally and officially known as Utqiagvik. The town was named after Sir John Barrow of the British Admiralty by famed north country explorer Frederick William Beechey in 1825.

The only way to really access Point Barrow these days is by plane (typically two flights daily) or by boat (barge) usually just two months out of the year. Because of dire transportation difficulties, the cost of living in Point Barrow is off the charts high and actually is reported 53.6% more than the average cost of living in the United States. Although salaries and wage type jobs pay pretty well up here, common food and supply items are extremely inflated from $17 dollar frozen pizzas to $40 dollars for a gallon of bleach!

With all that said, I was somewhat surprised to discover that many of our subscribers have mentioned to me by email and polling list that Point Barrow Alaska is indeed on their Bucket List as somewhere within their top 100 destinations that they would like to visit someday.

It seems the majority of visitors to Point Barrow just want to visit there to stake their claim that they traveled to the furthest northern point of the United States. Many of those same people also had visited the furthest southern part of the United States already by traveling to a far different climate – in the Florida Keys at Key West, Florida.

You may now be wondering, hey I might be able to easily handle the warmth and the Hemmingway Lifestyle of the Florida Keys too, but would Jimmy Buffet ever trek to Point Barrow?

My Family Connection In Point Barrow Alaska During WWII

Ever since I was a youngster, I was always fascinated with Alaska from all the stories my father would tell us kids around the dinner table about his service in Alaska during WWII in the Army Air Corps. Yep, that was just before they transitioned to the (USAF) United States Air Force. You see it was in Alaska, that just after Pearl Harbor became a major military location for personnel, aircraft, and airfields designated to defend the continental United States from enemy attacks or potential invasion from the northwest.

Alaska’s strategic defenses was indeed the frontline to North America. In fact it was the Japanese occupation of the Aleutian Islands of Kiska and Attu in June 1942 made Alaska the one theater or area in the Western Hemisphere in which Army ground and air forces met with a sizable battle test during World War II. It has been documented as the only land battle of World War II fought on incorporated territory of the United States… since Alaska did not officially become a State until 1959.

My father was mostly stationed during World War II at Ladd Army Airfield in Fairbanks. He would often talk of his adventurous exploits with his army buddies when they were granted their special R&R (rest and relaxation) periods of free time. They would venture out to explore places like Mt McKinley or a take quick visit to Anchorage for some bigger city excitement. I’ll always remember his fond memory of flying into to Point Barrow like others… just to say he was there.

Of course talking about Point Barrow Alaska to a bunch of kids with all that snow, reindeer and polar bears, he had to mention that being already that far north of the artic circle he was planning to go all the way to the North Pole to see Santa and see if we all were on his NICE list… but then he got his new orders that he had to ship out and didn’t quite make it up there.

Point Barrow Alaska is truly an All American township in it’s purest form. High School football here, like in most small towns across the USA is the centerpiece of this community The Point Barrow Alaska Whalers are the one and only Artic High School Football Team In America. Here is a very nice video produced by the NFL Network.

At The Top Of The World – Life Is Lived Below Zero!

                The Great Will Rogers Remembered

Pont Barrow is also sadly known as the place that the legendary Will Rogers, famous American stage and motion picture actor, vaudeville performer, American cowboy, humorist, newspaper columnist, and social commentator along with aviation pioneer Wiley Post died in a plane crash 16 miles outside of Barrow, Alaska on August 15, 1935.

Today the Point Barrow Alaska Regional Airport is named the Wiley Post–Will Rogers Memorial Airport in their honor. Yes Point Barrow Alaska is indeed a quite remote destination to get to, however it’s also a very friendly place to live and visit almost anytime of the year. In fact one of Will Rogers famous quotes says it best…

“Strangers are just friends I haven’t met yet.” — Will Rogers
