Highway 19E Is the Most Underrated Road Trip

Growing up in the mountains of North Carolina, I lived close to Highway 19E, a stretch of road that begins a short distance north of Asheville and ends in Bluff City, Tennessee. At first glance, 19E is a practical country road. It’s the sort of expanse travel writer William Least Heat-Moon might have called a “blue highway,” one of America’s old back roads marked in blue on the maps and almanacs travelers used before the era of apps. For those who know where to look, the road is like a multipurpose tool. Although it’s little known outside of the region, the 60-mile stretch connects as much natural diversity as any locale in southern Appalachia.

I need to confess that for years I traveled without travel insurance. When one of the people on the 2015 Amateur Traveler trip to Morocco didn’t read the fine print that travel insurance was required… I was that guy. But I have reformed. I now have an annual plan that covers all my travels. The disadvantages of travel insurance are easy. The disadvantages of travel insurance are easy. It costs money. If you could know ahead of time whether your trip would go well you wouldn’t need insurance. If you have enough savings to cover anything that might come up, then maybe you also can do without insurance. But… let’s talk about what might happen and what that could cost. The advantages are also pretty easy. If something goes wrong travel insurance will help… provided you have the right kind of insurance.

    The Rockettes’ ‘Christmas Spectacular’ Is Canceled

    For the first time in 87 years, the show at Radio City Music Hall won’t go on, the owner of the venue said Tuesday. “We regret that the 2020 production of the ‘Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes’” has been canceled, Madison Square Garden Entertainment said in a statement, citing “uncertainty associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.” According to the Rockettes’ website, more than 75 million people have seen the dancers perform since the Christmas show began in 1933. During a typical busy season, each of the 80 Rockettes may perform up to four shows a day, with each one kicking up to 650 times. As the news broke, several of the dancers posted their own statements on Instagram.
