If you didn’t know, the first Oktoberfest was first celebrated in Munich in 1810 in honor of Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The marriage celebration and royal festivities began on October 12, 1810, and lasted nearly a full week until October 17th concluding with a very anticipated and exciting horse race. The fields were renamed Theresienwiese, “Theres’a Fields” to honor the Crown Princess.

Why it’s not named Septemberfest. Have you ever wondered why does most Oktoberfest celebrations take place in September rather then in the month of October like the name implies? The answer is very logical and has to do with the cooler October weather in Germany during that time. The festival organizers eventually decided to start Oktoberfest weeks earlier towards the end of September to avoid the cool October weather, the common heavy October rains and also the late season harvesting concerns for local farmers.

I know firsthand how popular Oktoberfest celebrations are year to year across the United States and Canada because I am the original creator and publisher of the very popular brand GermanHeritageUSA that you may see online.

As a person of German Heritage myself, just over four years ago I started a facebook page dedicated to explore the impact of German Heritage related traditions, culture and history that German immigrants had on the shaping of America from coast to coast. I was actually pleasantly surprised that the effect was indeed far reaching.

Today on our GermanHeritageUSA facebook page and website, we share articles, reviews, images and videos on everything German Heritage related including restaurants, recipes, traditions, events and festivals like Oktoberfest.

The best thing about creating GermanHeritageUSA is the people that I have met along the way that have the same passion for their German Heritage although most have never been to Germany or speak any German at all.

It really is a family German Heritage genealogy thing.

I selected this older video from 2014 about Leavenworth Washington to show you what I think captures the essence of German Heritage in America from a community perspective touting German Heritage tourism with a Bavarian theme spin to give visitors a glimpse of the Bavarian experience.

There are so many other small towns and communities spread out all across the United States and Canada that embrace their German Heritage roots and traditions like in Frankenmuth Michigan, La Crosse Wisconsin, Hermann Missouri, New Ulm Minnesota, Mt Angel Oregon, Helen Georgia and Fredricksburg Texas just to name a few.

They would be all great places to visit to experience a fun Oktoberfest celebration… stateside.

I remember some of my best travels over the years have been when my wife and I took brief weekend trips somewhere. It was usually within an 8 hour drive and we would book a hotel room in advance of our getaway, then just relax on the beach, or hike on some nearby trails. We would visit the local tourist attraction, try new restaurants and maybe go to a winery, a quaint festival or check out a live music venue.

As our daughter was growing up, we did pretty much the same things, however I tended to record these “family experiences” more often with videos and digital pictures. The point is just travel and share all those wonderful experiences with the one’s you love.
