At Travel USA Life, we spend a lot of time encouraging folks to go big or go explore—to chase the magic of far-off places, to get lost in theme parks, trails, oceanside escapes, and roadside diners. But sometimes, the best adventures are right in your own backyard.

Sometimes, all you need is a short drive, a little luck, and a two-year-old yelling, “Yeehaw!” at the top of his lungs to realize that entertainment isn’t always about distance—it’s about the moment.

Welcome to our story about the First Annual Music City Rodeo and a Jelly Roll concert that turned a regular Friday night into one of the most unforgettable local road trips we’ve ever taken.

As it turns out, Nashville, Tennessee—just 30 to 40 minutes from our home base (depending on that infamous Music City traffic)—still has the power to surprise and delight, even after all these years. These days, it’s simply better than ever!

The Call-In That Kicked It All Off

Earlier in the week, Rhonda—always the spontaneous one—decided to dial in to a local Nashville radio station promoting ticket giveaways for the upcoming Music City Rodeo at the iconic Bridgestone Arena, right in the heart of Broadway.

Sure enough, the radio gods were smiling: she won! But fate wasn’t done yet. The next day, her sister Kim called the same station.

Wouldn’t you know it—she won too.

The Rockettes’ ‘Christmas Spectacular’ Is Canceled

For the first time in 87 years, the show at Radio City Music Hall won’t go on, the owner of the venue said Tuesday. “We regret that the 2020 production of the ‘Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes’” has been canceled, Madison Square Garden Entertainment said in a statement, citing “uncertainty associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.” According to the Rockettes’ website, more than 75 million people have seen the dancers perform since the Christmas show began in 1933. During a typical busy season, each of the 80 Rockettes may perform up to four shows a day, with each one kicking up to 650 times. As the news broke, several of the dancers posted their own statements on Instagram.

    The Patriot Filming Locations to Visit

    The 2000 film The Patriot tells of a South Carolinian man named Benjamin Martin that leads an uprising after his son was murdered by a British officer. The plot is loosely based on the life of “The Swamp Fox” Francis Marion, who engaged in guerilla warfare during the Revolutionary War. Mel Gibson starred alongside then-newcomer Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson, Jason Isaacs, and Chris Cooper. All of the filming took place in South Carolina, specifically the Upstate and Lowcountry. The town of Rock Hill served as the production’s headquarters. A private farm in Chester was where the scene depicting the Battle of Cowpens took place, which was a significant defeat in the real-life British campaign. They transformed it into a Colonial village with a church and cabins. The small towns of Fort Lawn and Lowrys were also used.

    WOW aquarium regains title as America’s Best Aquarium in USA Today poll

    Springfield’s WOW aquarium beat out Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium in Springfield has regained its title as America’s Best Aquarium, according to a poll conducted by USA Today. Wonders of Wildlife was previously voted by USA Today readers as “America’s Best New Attraction” in 2017 and “America’s Best Aquarium” in 2018. One of Springfield’s biggest tourist attractions, WOW aquarium opened in 2017 after more than five years of construction.

          Walt Disney World’s Epcot and Hollywood Studios welcomed back visitors on Wednesday, completing a rolling opening of Disney World’s theme parks that started last weekend with Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. The parks were the last of Orlando’s major theme parks to reopen. Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando opened their doors last month.
