For many travelers, it’s seen as the season to endure rather than explore—a time of flight delays, bulky coats, and destinations put on pause until spring. But for those willing to lean into the chill, winter reveals a quieter, more intimate side of America that most people never see.
When the crowds thin and the temperatures drop, certain towns don’t just survive winter—they shine. Streets feel more personal. Conversations linger longer. Landscapes simplify into something almost cinematic, where snow, light, and silence do the storytelling.
These are the hidden American towns that reward winter travelers. They’re not always famous. They don’t chase attention. But in the cold months, they feel authentic, atmospheric, and quietly unforgettable.
As author Rebecca Solnit once wrote:
“Travel is a way of stretching the mind and the heart at the same time.”
Winter just happens to stretch them a little deeper.
Why Winter Is the Best Time to Discover Hidden Towns
Winter strips travel down to its essentials. Without packed itineraries or long lines, you notice things differently—the sound of boots on snow, the glow of a café window at dusk, the way a town breathes when it isn’t performing for visitors.
Hidden towns thrive in this season because they were never built for mass tourism. They were built for living. Winter simply turns down the volume and lets their character speak.
And yes, it’s cold—but that’s part of the charm.
Red Lodge — Montana
Gateway to Yellowstone, Without the Crowds
Red Lodge feels like a Western film paused mid-scene.
This former coal-mining town sits at the base of the Beartooth Mountains, and in winter, it becomes something beautifully still. Brick buildings line the main street, their facades dusted with snow, while local bars and diners glow warmly against the cold.
What makes Red Lodge special in winter is access. While Yellowstone’s interior roads close, the surrounding landscapes remain dramatic and uncrowded. Locals ski, snowshoe, and swap stories like they’ve done for generations.
Why it’s worth the cold: Fewer people, bigger skies, and an unfiltered Montana experience.
Galena — Illinois
A 19th-Century Town Wrapped in Snow
Galena already looks historic—but winter completes the picture.
Perched among rolling hills near the Mississippi River, Galena’s preserved 1800s architecture feels especially alive when snow outlines its brickwork and iron railings. The famous Main Street slopes gently downhill, creating postcard-worthy views in every direction.
In winter, Galena slows to a cozy hum. Antique shops feel warmer, inns feel more personal, and the town’s layered history becomes easier to absorb without crowds pressing behind you.
Why it’s worth the cold: You get the town’s full charm, minus the bus tours.
Bisbee — Arizona
A Snow-Free Winter with Storybook Soul
Not all winter-worthy towns come with snow.
Bisbee sits high in the Mule Mountains, where winter days are crisp but sunny. The former copper-mining town is a maze of staircases, hillside homes, and narrow streets that feel delightfully frozen in time.
Artists, writers, and free spirits have claimed Bisbee as their own, giving it a creative edge that contrasts beautifully with its old-world bones. Winter is the perfect time to explore without desert heat or seasonal crowds.
Why it’s worth the cold: Winter comfort without winter hardship—and one of the most unique town layouts in America.
The magic of fall in America isn’t just something you see — it’s something you feel. It’s in the crunch of leaves under your boots, the cool breeze that carries a hint of campfire smoke, and the golden light that makes even the most ordinary town look enchanted. From mountain ridges blanketed in color to quiet backroads lined with red maples, the landscape feels alive with change — a final burst of beauty before winter’s stillness.
It’s a season of cozy layers and pumpkin spice, of steaming mugs of cider and weekend road trips that start with no destination in mind. Farmers’ markets brim with apples and pumpkins, small towns host harvest parades, and travelers chase the colors as they sweep from north to south. Every curve in the road seems to unveil another breathtaking scene — a red barn against a field of gold, a church steeple rising through fiery treetops, a mirror-like lake reflecting the forest’s glowing canopy.
In fall, time seems to slow down. There’s space to breathe, to wander, to appreciate the simple pleasures — a flannel blanket, a good book, or the laughter of friends around a bonfire. Whether you’re exploring the mountain trails of Vermont, the rolling vineyards of California, or the shores of the Great Lakes, autumn in America is more than a season. It’s a reminder to pause, look around, and fall in love with the beauty of the moment.
Whether you’re craving a classic New England leaf-peeping adventure, a hidden gem in the Midwest, or a mountain escape out West, America offers an endless array of fall wonders waiting to be explored.
So grab your favorite sweater, a thermos of apple cider, and your camera — here are 15 breathtaking fall foliage destinations that capture the soul of autumn across the U.S.

This fresh chapter of Travel USA Life brings a bolder vision, richer experiences, and even more inspiring ways to explore the heart and soul of America.
Hello fellow travel dreamers, explorers, and deal seekers—It’s Brian here, the voice behind the newly refreshed Travel USA Life blog. If you’ve been with me on this journey before, you might remember our earlier adventures under the name Travel USA Discounts.
That chapter was all about finding ways to explore this incredible country affordably. And while the love for saving money hasn’t gone anywhere, the story has evolved—and so have I.
After taking a year-long break from the blog (more on that shortly), I’m back, reenergized and excited to reintroduce you to the newly minted Travel USA Life.
It’s not just a name change—it’s a shift in perspective. It’s a mindset. It’s about celebrating the vibrant, colorful journey of life that travel can offer, while still finding ways to make it more accessible through smart savings.
Let me take you on the inside track of why I paused, what’s inspiring this reboot, and what’s coming next. Spoiler alert: there are travel tips, tech hacks, sunset snaps, and a few Grandpa stories ahead.
Why I Took a Break: The Real Talk
Life has a funny way of hitting pause on your plans.
Over the past five years or so, I dealt with some major health setbacks that required my full attention. It started with congestive heart failure as a result of prolonged sleep apnea plus an extended atrial flutter condition. It was six weeks later; I was then diagnosed with the rare hairy cell leukemia in which I immediately started with chemo treatments, that was all just prior to the start of COVID-19 period.
I was lock down just before the world was. As a result of some of that medication, I had to have my thyroid removed. Most recently, I underwent a total hip replacement last October.
Add in some recovery time, therapy, and a few other life speed bumps, and it became clear that I needed to step away from my business and recreational blogging for a while to focus on simple healing and getting better day after day.
My health today is very good going forward. Even my cardiologist says after numerous tests that I again have a strong heart, and I don’t have congestive heart failure anymore.
But healing doesn’t just mean physically. Mentally and emotionally, I found myself needing to reevaluate the direction of this blog, my work, and even how I spend my time.
I’ve since stepped into semi-retirement, which means I still work a few days a week as a Director of Business Development here in Middle Tennessee, but I’ve also reclaimed a lot of time to explore my passions.
And explore we will.
Big Life Moments in the Meantime
Though I was grounded for a bit, life certainly didn’t slow down. In fact, some of the best moments of my life happened during this pause:
Our home residence underwent total renovation upstairs and down. We had a new inground pool installed and a patio covered outdoor kitchen built.
My daughter graduated college and got married shortly after.
We went on a few beach vacations and even took a cruise to the Bahamas.
Best of all, we became grandparents for the very first time!
I go by B-Pops now (my wife Rhonda is lovingly called Birdie), and being a grandparent has added a beautiful new layer to life’s journey. It’s another reason why I’m passionate about sharing the joy of travel—because time and memories are the true currency of life.
Introducing: Travel USA Life

Tech tips for travelers
And reflections on living joyfully and purposefully
Think of Travel USA Life as your digital travel sandwich (more on that in a second).

It was fun for me personally to discover a trending YouTube video featuring James Corden’s Astronaut Training with LEGO2 Movie Stars that include Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett. What made it fun is because as I have been several times to the NASA Space Center located in Huntsville Alabama Space and their Space Camp is something I only dreamed that I could have experienced as a youngster as I was an avid fan of NASA back then.
James Corden invites the stars, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett of The LEGO Movie 2 to Space Camp at the NASA Space Center in Alabama for a battery of astronaut ready tests to determine who is most fit and qualified to make a career change as an astronaut.
The always skit funny James Corden and his wayward cast of NASA wannabe Reluctant Astronaut recruits are welcomed to Space Camp by Captain Robert “Hoot” Gibson who is a retired US Navy fighter pilot and a NASA Space Shuttle Pilot who logged over 36 days in orbit. Don Knotts would have loved to been in this group.
One of the first test that Captain Gibson puts the recruits through is with the Space Camp Dual Centrifuge System designed for trainees.
The Centrifuge was my favorite ride at the Huntsville Alabama NASA location although the Group Centrifuge System intended for the general public was one I personally went on and it thankfully had a lower impact rating attached to it.
My favorite part of this whole video is when James was in the Space Shuttle simulator and broke out to the tune, Rocket Man by Elton John. Hilarious!
I’m guessing by now that you have watched this amusing video in it’s entirety and agree that it’s pure fun and games for this foursome of soon to be rejected Astronaut Cadets. If ever you are traveling in the great state of Alabama, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville is an absolute tourism destination location that you must visit. It is an interactive and highly integrated Space Museum in itself. Be prepared to spend the entire day there.
In the conclusion of this testing, Captain Hoot Gibson announces to the trainees that all of them exhibited the intelligence, bravery and creativity that they look for in Astronauts, but there can be only one winner. With that said, he announces that Elizabeth Banks is the winner because she had the Right Stuff in the final analysis. Elizabeth took it like a true and quite humble champion by quickly asking, ” When do we go in space?” You have to see the funny reactions of everyone else.
Also be sure to watch The Late Late Show with James Corden weeknights at 12:35 AM ET/11:35 PM CST. Only on CBS.

I Don’t Travel Because… It’s Always A Lack Of Money Issue
Do you have a desire to travel (wanderlust) but when it comes down to it the reason you don’t is because it’s a money issue? Why if I told you that I can personally help you with changing that situation within a month if not sooner so you too can start enjoying the GoodLife everyday starting today?
How is that possible? Have your ever heard of crowd funding?
Now I’m not speaking of the traditional crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, GoFundMe or Patreon that are marketed with multi-million dollar budgets within all forms (television, radio, print, etc.) of the mainstream media everyday.
Actually it is those high profile crowdfunding platforms that you have to pretty much market all of your personal crowdfunding campaigns yourself to countless friends, family and total strangers in order to get donations. It’s also those high profile crowdfunding platforms that are designed to receive all of your donations first so they get their commissions initially before you receive anything.
What I am talking about is the new method of cooperative crowdfunding where you are funded peer to peer and most often start receiving 100% of your donations within hours if not a few days. There are no middlemen companies involved to get their percentage of your donations first… and you really need to only find just TWO PEOPLE to start donating to your cause (not thousands) to get the floodgates of other donations to open up and start streaming in.
It’s indeed a Crowdfunding Revolution that is taking place globally and with the recent advancement of a new technology component called the Mobius Loop technology system that is now in place, it’s definately the right time and place to begin to Fund Any Or All Of Your Dreams today!
Are you ready to take a look yet?
Just CLICK THIS LINK RIGHT HERE or on the image above, fill in your information and then simply just sit back watch a few short videos, especially the last one to see what it’s all about. I guarantee you will be impressed how easy it can be.
Introducing our newest monthly segment at Travel USA Discounts… it’s our TOP 3 TRAVEL USA VLOGGER’S REVIEW. Over this most recent holiday season our staff got together to come up with a fun project that we could do collectively as a special segment each month for our ever populating viewership base.
We decided to start this January 2019 a vlog review segment and feature three different USA related VLOG Channels from YouTube and showcase and review three of their respective videos each. Sounds fun, right?
With that said, we searched YouTube videos high and low for the most interesting vlogs out there that caught our eye. Going into this search, our thinking is that our criteria for selecting our initial video choices will be rather simplistic. We were looking for vlog videos that offered the most genuine and original content.
We also looked at the personalities of the vloggers if they had fun, a sense of adventure while projecting enjoyment doing their videos. Finally their videos had to resonate with those of us that love to travel to a variety of destination locations all across America.
It really doesn’t matter to us if your content is the most polished with professional edits, music and dialog however we do look for vloggers with upbeat likeability traits. We love those that also portray a sense of anticipation and discovery within their travel videos too.
A lot of our viewers agree that it’s not really the final destination location of travel videos that capture their interest and imagination but sometimes it’s the entirety of the journey from start to finish. That’s why many successful travel vloggers will have video footage of them leaving for their destination by car on a fun road trip or by air travel with shots of them at the airport leaving, or showing the wing outside their window high above the clouds.
An Open Invitation To Vlog About Traveling The USA
Let it be known that we at Travel USA Discounts are offering everyone an Open Invitation to vlog about travel destination locations, both big and small within the USA and submit it to our staff to potentially get it featured at some point on our blog. You can be a newbie vlogger or a seasoned pro.
You can submit personal vlog storylines of just getting started vlogging with only your smart phone camera while using a free online video editing software to advanced professional video editing technology.
The point is, if you can produce favorable vlog content, chances are that we will want to at some point showcase your work. You can create a video from a visit to Times Square in New York City, or a video from a travel to a remote cornfield in Albion, Nebraska. Remember, it’s not where you shoot your video, but rather your adventurous storyline behind it.
#1 The Wandering Wyatt’s – Blair & Matt
Starting off our Top 3 Vlogger Reviews, in no particular order we discovered Blair & Matt. Their YouTube channel is named, “The Wandering Wyatts.” To find them, our staff used a particular travel vlog usa search method that pulled them right up. After reviewing numerous videos within their channel, they pretty matched much all of our criteria guidelines.
All we can say about this fun couple is that we all here at Travel USA Discounts have become big fans of theirs… almost instantly from the first video of theirs that we reviewed.
WELCOME TO THE WYATTS WANDER TEXAS SERIES
This is the first video we came across in 2019 that we discovered. It was created by a young couple that vlogs for enjoyment named Blair and Matt known as the Wandering Wyatt’s.
Their opening introduction in this video really captured our interest regarding the beer bottle caps that actually promote small town destinations all across the State of Texas. What an innovative idea.
Actually it’s a bit of genius when it comes to travel promotions if you ask us. Wyatt discusses his great idea to travel to the first location that pops up under the bottle top.
On this second video from the Wandering Wyatt’s, what we really like about Blair and Matt a lot is their transparency regarding all things personal including earnings that they have received from their YouTube channel. They also openly talk about other sources of revenue from their channel that they may eventually plan to pursue.
When it comes down to it their vlogging adventure started as a simple hobby or passion of Blair’s and kind of evolved into what it is today. She receives sheer enjoyment from putting their videos together and editing. This helps them connect with other people. The modest amount of money that they get from YouTube for their channel is just considered by them to be bonus income.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO OUR YOUTUBE FAMILY!
This video is their first one in 2019 and is quite informative as Blair and Matt spend a few moments to update their channel subscribers where they been recently. Blair explains that they disappeared for awhile to spend some quality time with loved ones over the Christmas Holiday season. For those that didn’t know, there is a baby on the way and is sure to bring much excitement and blessings into their lives.
They also discuss plans to not make too many plans in their immediate future until they figure things out. The last part of this video, Blair & Matt share lots of video and pictures of fun and games with family over the Christmas.
We think the Wandering Wyatt’s YouTube Channel is only going to get better and better in the months and years to come. With the addition of a new baby, they decided to put their RV Travels on hold for awhile as they clear their property to build a new container style home. We are anxiously looking forward to many more entertaining videos to come and wish Blair & Matt much success in their future.
Be sure to subscribe to Blair & Matt’s, The Wandering Wyatt’s channel on YouTube today!
If you like big Mall Shopping Centers, there is none larger then the Mall Of America. See Makenna and Kyle as explore this massive mall while in Minnesota and experience a variety of high tech amusement park rides and food with a little shopping along the way.
By chance they encounter fellow youtuber named Marissa and her family. Kyle notices her vlogging camera and strikes up a quick conversation confirming that yes she vlogs too. After lunch, they all decide that it would be a lot of fun to enjoy each others company and ride on all the amusement rides together.
Looks like a great time for all at the Mall Of America indeed.
Driving Straight for 9 Hours During 6 Month Road Trip
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go on a road trip across America for 6 months? This video captures Kyle and Makenna’s midwestern journey that has them leaving Denver Colorado to trek across Kansas for a quick pitstop in Wichita, then to Kansas City for awhile on their way up to Iowa to spend some time with family.
Before leaving Denver they switch vehicles with friends for a larger, more roomy Chevrolet Suburban to continue on their journey. See Kyle and Makenna traveling across the great plains for over 500 miles seeing nothing but flat terrain and hundreds of wind turbines off I-70.
As darkness arrives they finally arrive at their destination in Wichita. They were scheduled to MeetUp with some of their YouTube Channel Fans at the Fairmount Coffee House. It seems everyone had a great time with fun loving conversations and a quick game of Yahtzee.
Say, isn’t that the Fairmount Coffee House location they went to across from Wichita State University? Yep, that’s my hometown where I grew up and the college I went to school at.
The next day Kyle and Makenna plan to get up early in the morning and head out towards Kansas City for their next stop on their way to Iowa. During their visit to Kansas City, they plan to a lot of sight seeing and also catch their first ever NFL game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs. Good times ahead!
Do you Gott Love yet? We do here at Travel USA Discounts and are really looking forward to Makenna and Kyle’s next video adventure for sure. Be sure to subscribe to Makenna & Kyle’s, Gott Love channel on YouTube today!
You can tell Tess has great taste in everything she experiences in life and that includes her relationship with Patrick, her soon to be husband. You will soon discover that Patrick is also a fun loving adventurer as well and their sometimes this couples impromptu travel escapades make it always exciting to tag along with them and experience life to the fullest.
We were all simply amazed by not only Tess’s storyline of traveling to San Francisco to make this video, but the radiance and likability factor that both she and her fiancé Patrick projects on video.
Home town in Minnesota and Wisconsin
Living your everyday life in New York City can be fun and adventurous in itself however knowing where you come from can be just as exciting as we see Tess and Patrick return to their roots to revisit where they grew up. Minnesota and Wisconsin has never looked so good!
It’s always fun to see someone’s hometown from their own eyes as they recreate experiences with family and friends that made them who they are. In Tess’s home state of Wisconsin, you will see scenes of them riding bicycles around the neighborhood on a summer day, waltzing through beautiful sunflower fields in the countryside, eating stone fired pizza outdoors at a community gathering and having fun on the local lake with friends.
Speaking of having fun at the lake, the last part of this video takes us to Patrick’s home state on Minnesota where there’s over 10,000 lakes to choose from to swim and have fun. It’s obvious that one of Patrick’s passions growing up in his hometown was going down to the local library to get a good book and maybe even hang out downtown to enjoy a cold summertime refreshment drink with a straw.
Visiting the local garden market looked like pure enjoyment as did just relaxing on the spacious front porch at home.
This video concludes with Tess and Patrick’s visit to a nearby local waterfall attraction and a day ending boat ride on the local town lake that perfectly framed their visit to Minnesota.
Pacific Northwest – Portland and Seattle at Twilight
It’s very cool where you can visit somewhere in the USA that you can connect to a famous movie that was filmed on location there. In this case you will see how passionate Tess is regarding the movie Twilight (2008) as a lot of it was filmed on location just outside of Portland OR.
Patrick, are you really starting your day off for breakfast in Portland at VooDoo Doughnuts with a Captain Crunch cereal topping on that huge doughnut? It was really fun Tess & Patrick attempt to recreate famous scenes from Twilight with reciting movie script lines from sort of information based cue card markers along their path.
In the last minute they decided to hop on a train to Seattle Washington for an overnight stay. The next day they decided to explore the world famous Pike Place Market area and experienced tons of fun.
So we think Tess’s Channel brings her viewers tons of videos that accentuates her and Patrick’s normal, everyday genuine personalities that also integrates a sense of beauty, fashion and travel adventure into their everyday lifestyle of just being who they are.
Also, most of you have likely figured out by now that Tess & Andrew are engaged to be married. Be sure to subscribe to their channel on YouTube to follow their Week In My Life video series as they prepare to announce the big day.
As loyal channel subscribers ourselves, we at Travel USA Discounts wish this happy couple our very best and a prosperous future together. Congratulations!
So there it is. That’s our Top 3 Travel USA Vlogger’s Review for January 2019.
🙂

It’s indeed a Crowdfunding Revolution that is taking place globally and with the recent advancement of a new technology component called the Mobius Loop technology system that is now in place, it’s definately the right time and place to begin to Fund Any Or All Of Your Dreams today!

Christmas Village USA – It’s Leavenworth Washington
Many refer to it as Christmas Village USA and it’s located in Leavenworth Washington just about 30 miles east of Seattle. Other then Frankenmuth, Michigan and perhaps Helen, Georgia there is possibly no place like this Bavarian themed looking village of Leavenworth Washington during the entire Christmas season. In fact it was once rated by the Travel Channel as the #1 Christmas Destination to put on your bucket list to visit.
Every year at this time, Leavenworth is decked out for Christmas with aromatic smells of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, crooning Christmas carolers strolling about the streets, numerous festive food and beverage booths, horse drawn sleigh rides, local seasonal holiday crafts, outdoor musical entertainment and even Saint Nick himself.
Leavenworth Is Truly A Winter Wonderland That Surrounds You
This picturesque Bavarian-themed mountain village in Leavenworth is a tourism haven for browsing the town’s quaint old-world themed shops, savoring authentic German food from street stands and local restaurants as you enjoy live outdoor Omp pah pah Christmas Holiday musical entertainment. To really get in the Christmas spirit, take a fancible ride on a horse-drawn winter carriage.
At dusk, gather with thousands of other visitors for the Christmas Lights Ceremony along the town promenade. Watch in child-like excitement as all the surrounding trees and buildings all over Leavenworth suddenly come alive from the tens of thousands twinkling lights that magically illuminate Leavenworth in all of it’s Christmas time glory!
Tourism in Leavenworth Washington is fantastic any time of the year. In fact the folks that help promote Leavenworth Tourism claim they have four distinct seasons to show off the wonder and majesty of their little corner of the world. The Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce and Visit Leavenworth do phenomenal promotions all year long. We often use our Travel USA Discounts BLOG to promote other Bloggers or those of you that VLOG across America showcasing hidden gems to visit like Leavenworth. Our staff has discovered a cute couple named Mara and David under the YouTube Channel, Fireside Traveler to feature within this post. See for yourself as they drive US Highway 2 east across Stevens’s pass through the Cascade Mountains to explore Leavenworth, Washington during the festive Christmas Lights Ceremony. What an experience!
I don’t know about you but I’m thinking if I can’t get to Leavenworth Washington this holiday season, I could at least get to Starbucks to see if they have a Egg Nog Mocha like David got on his and Mara’s way to Leavenworth. I’m sure you will agree that now when anybody ask you, “Where is the best Christmas Village in the USA, you will say it’s in Leavenworth of course.”
